Spaghetti Exercise

This exercise offers you a convenient graph to use when your momma pooch has a large litter.  Using the graph, once you know how many pups are in the litter, you can decide how much it would cost to feed them spaghetti. Then, using graph data, you can decide whether you can afford to feed the pups…

 

·          pasta alone

·          pasta with sauce

·          or pasta with sauce and meat

 

For extra credit, do another sheet, which includes a puppy (in a picture), and figure prices for hamburger buns, hamburgers, and cheeseburgers.

 

Step     Action                                    

 

1          Open a new spreadsheet file in Excel.

           

2          Enter Categories.  Here's how...                                   

                        Enter text SPAGHETTI in the cell highlighted (A1)

                        Tab to Cell B1

                        Enter 1, Press Tab

                        Enter 2 in C1, Tab, 3 in D1, Tab, etc.

                        Continue until you enter 12 in Cell M1, Tab

 

3          Enter Serving Sizes.  Here's how...                              

                        Use arrow keys to scroll left & down to Cell A2

                        Enter Row 2 legend... SERVINGS

                        Tab to Cell B2

                        Enter 1 in B2, Tab

                        Enter 1.1 in C2, 1.2 in D2, 1.3 in E2, etc.

                        Continue until you enter 2.1 in M2, Tab

 

4          Enter Pasta Price Formula.  Here's how...                   

                        Use arrow keys to scroll left & down to Cell A3

                        Enter Row 3 legend... PASTA

                        Tab to Cell B3

                        Enter basic formula in Cell B3               =B2*.4

                        Click check mark, or otherwise accept.

 

5          Enter Pasta Sauce Price Formula.  Here's how...         

                        Use arrow keys to scroll left & down to Cell A4

                        Enter Row 4 legend... SAUCE

                        Tab to Cell B4

                        Enter basic formula in Cell B4               =B2*.25

                        Click check mark, or otherwise accept.

6          Enter Meat Price Formula.  Here's how...       

                        Use arrow keys to scroll left & down to Cell A5

                        Enter Row 5 legend... MEAT

                        Tab to Cell B5

                        Enter basic formula in Cell B5               =B2*.35

                        Click check mark, or otherwise accept.

 

7                    Fill & Format.  Here's how...   

                                   

                       Fill the formulas to the right up to (and including) column M. (One way is to hold the Shift button down continuously while you click successively on cells B3 and then [after scrolling across] M5. Then click Control-R or select Edit>Fill>Right.)

NOTE:  From now on, the block B3 to M5 should remain highlighted. Be sure to Fill Right in the next step.

                                                Select “Cells” under Format Menu and then click "Number" and then “Currency”

Set “Decimal Places” to 2 (if not already set)

                        Click OK

                        Save the document.

 

8          Generate Graph.   Here's how...           

Hold the Shift button down continuously while you click successively on cells A3 and then [after scrolling across] M5.

                        Click on the Graph icon

                        Select the Stacked Bars Column Graph Style

                        Click Next

                        Click Next again

Enter a title that describes the graph, and enter Number of Servings (X-axis) and Price (Y-axis)

                        Click Finish

                        Move the Graph to about an inch from the left

                       

8                    Print.  Here’s how…

Use Page Setup (under the File Menu)

                                    Page:  Click Landscape and “Fit to page” buttons

                                    Margins:  Click to center horizontally

                                    Header:  Insert your name in the Header

                                    Sheet: Enter print area A1:M30 (or larger, if needed)

                                    Save, print and turn in to your instructor
